Types of Storms

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

There are so many types of storms out there - many people get hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones confused.

Do you know the difference between these storms?

The location of where the storm occurs is the only difference.

Hurricanes are large tropical storms in the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States of America.

Typhoons are the tropical storms in the region of the Western Pacific Oceans and/or the region of the Indian Oceans.

Cyclones are the tropical storms in the in the South Pacific Oceans and Indian Oceans.

These storms are all created by a combination of preexisting weather disturbance, warm tropical oceans, moisture and relatively light winds.

For more information on these storms go to www.oceanservice.noaa.gov.

The National Ocean Service helps coastal communities prepare for and recover from major coastal storms such as hurricanes.
